On the 14th December 2022, the Minister for Finance and Local Government announced the Provisional 2023/24 Local Government Settlement. This is the funding from Welsh Government that Councils across Wales receive, and forms the main part of our annual Budget income.
The settlement for Rhondda Cynon Taf amounts to an increase of 6.6%, which is below the average across Wales.
This settlement for 2023/24 was more positive than expected, but it still falls short of fully funding the significant pressures that RCT is facing at a time when our residents, businesses and communities are facing a cost of living crisis. We are currently facing a budget gap (which is the difference between how much we need to spend and how much funding we have) of over £38 million.
We now need to make decisions and take actions to make sure that our budget for 2023/24 is equitable (fair) for everyone, protects our key services wherever possible and doesn’t leave us in a worse position for the following year.
Phase 2 Consultation ends at 5pm on 6 February 2023.
